Abstract
This chapter sets out to compare and contrast the development of ceramic studies undertaken in Russia during the recent past with those in the West. It will also make comparisons between methodologies used to study urban assemblages of medieval pottery. Finally, to set the scene for the later chapters, we give an introduction to the excavation terminology of Novgorod, and discuss two scholars whop have particularly influenced medieval ceramic studies in Russia.
