Abstract

Since the identification of air travel as a significant and growing contributor to climate change, there has been a concurrent rise in academic literature concerned with aviation carbon emissions. In the case of air travel from the United Kingdom to New Zealand, the UK comprises NZ’s largest long-haul visitor market; and, like other European source markets, emits the most carbon per capita through air travel to NZ because of sheer geographical distance. This paper reports UK consumer perceptions of air travel’s climate impact and assesses implications for future travel decisions to NZ. Based on 15 semi-structured, open-ended interviews conducted in Bournemouth, UK during June 2009, it was found that UK consumers were unlikely to avoid potential air travel to NZ because of climate concern. The research did reveal, however, a more general spectrum of climate awareness and concern towards air travel in consumer responses. This concern ranged from individuals who were largely unaware of air travel’s climate contribution to others who were moving towards consuming air travel with an increasing ‘carbon conscience’.
