Abstract
This paper explores the performance of non western LGBTQ identities, foregrounding the documentaries Coming Out in The Developing World (John Scagliotti, 2003), Jihad for Love (Parvez Sharma, 2007) and Out in Iran (Farid Haerinejad, 2007). A central point of concern is exploring the contention of non western LGBTQ potentials. There is an uneasy tension in the juxtaposition of western centric libertarian democratic ideals; counter pointed against the confines and punishments of local (non western) worlds.
