Abstract

Abstract: Review of challenges and limits to written health information and some of the benefits. Conducting a needs analysis of health education literature: Writing health promotion messages is harder than it looks. Much of the published health education literature are not in appropriate formats to engage the interests of patients (Chapman and Langridge 1997). Recipients of health education literature often misunderstand or ignore it. Not only do leaflets and booklets intend to inform patients, but they aim to help people change their health related behaviours. This workshop helps you identify those features that make written information more accessible to your patients, and will explain strategies for helping them implement changes in their behaviours. Involving your patients in the process of developing the material is one of the main ways of ensuring effectiveness in delivering health promotion messages. In this workshop, you explore ways of getting information on what your patients need. Key messages Written health information needs to be: Accessible, Engaging, Relevant, Accurate and Motivating Based on the Needs of your patients and checked with them for effectiveness Given and repeated at the right time Intended presentation content Conducting a needs analysis for health education literature Discussion centred on checklist for designing readable health education literature
