Abstract

As competition for graduate jobs increases, students and employers are using engagement with extra-curricular activities as a differentiating factor in the employment market (Norton and Thomas, 2009). Many universities are providing recognition for this activity through an additional award. Bournemouth University piloted its Student Development Award in 2010/11 concurrently with the development of its Student Experience Strategy. One of the aims of this under the core theme of Student Communities is to ensure that the student feels a valued member of the BU community and the BU Student Development Award is one of the vehicles for achieving this.
