Abstract
Discusses the ways in which Sherlock Holmes can be viewed as a challenge to gender essentialism and makes similar links with the American TV series House. Draws upon the theories of Butler, Carver et al to argue that both characters are representative of their social context and challenge social convention and gender stereotypes, othering multi-faceted alternatives.
