Abstract
This paper presents the results of an investigation into the failure of bolted joints in composite panels. The design of specific failure mode is a key element of this research and one that is a relatively specialist concept but important particularly in relation to rotor blade tip design, where a controlled failure is essential to protect the primary structure during blade strike. The results of a first set of analytical and experimental investigations are reported, covering optimisation of bolted composite joints and, in this case bolt group configurations, ensuring that the optimum balance of safety and material efficiency is achieved.
