Abstract

Carotid artery dissection is a cause of ischaemic stroke in patients of all ages. Though it is well known as a risk factor for stroke in young adults, it is also important in the differential diagnosis of stroke in old age. Recognition of early warning symptoms and subsequent prompt treatment may prevent long-term cerebral ischaemic sequalae. Optimum treatment has not been established by randomised controlled trials but antithrombotic medication is regarded as safe and effective. Antiplatelet agents and anticoagulation are both considered reasonable treatment modalities, and the unproven issues and uncertainties surrounding these treatment choices are discussed in this review.
