Abstract

Charles Parker was born in Bournemouth on 5 April 1919. Throughout the seventeen years that this report's author has taught radio in the Bournemouth Media School at the town's university - and for most of his career as a programme-maker - he has held an ambition to celebrate Parker in his birthplace. Last year the Broadcasting History Group was established within the Media School and, with the help of research funding, set about establishing a number of initiatives to explore aspects of broadcasting's short but significant past. The first of these initiatives to bear visible fruit has been Charles Parker Day, a one-day conference held on the producer's birthday: this report has been drawn from the first Charles Parker Day Conference, held in Bournemouth (UK), on 5 April 2004.
