Abstract

The article emphasizes the importance of the involvement of nurses in clinical research to the development of their career. A study of research careers undertaken in four universities in south west England found that nursing and midwifery academics expressed enthusiasm for their research achievements over the past five years, and wanted to sustain and develop them further. Lecturer-practitioner, practice educator and academic in practice roles have been introduced to encourage the integration of theory and practice.
