Abstract
This book chapter reviews the history of community radio in Italy including the early days of pirate and free radio in the 1970s, the development of radio broadcasting policies and public funding mechanisms from 1990 onwards, the key experiences of the Radio Gap network and concludes with considerations for the future if this sector in the country. The book was published within the context of the celebrations for 100 years of radio broadcasting in Italy (1924-2024) and includes chapters on public service, commercial and community radio, as well podcast and streaming technologies, and a range of radio programming formats such news, talk radio and music-based formats.
