Abstract

In August 2003 one of the authors (RC) was metal-detecting in a field beside the B44 west of Cronkedooney at NGR SC225713 when he discovered a small metal chisel-like implement. Previous investigations of the field by Larch Garrad and others in 1987 revealed two empty and much damaged lintel graves but whether the bronze tool is at all related to these cannot be determined. An early Bronze Age flat axe was found in a field near Ballakelly cottage to the east of the B44. This short report provides a description of the tool and sets out the results of a chemical analysis.
